Dr. Steve Cadrin – Professor & Stock Assessment Scientist
Steve Cadrin is a Professor at the University of Massachusetts School for Marine Science and Technology. Steve has a PhD in Fisheries Science from University of Rhode Island, a MS in Marine Biology from University of Massachusetts, and a BS in Marine Science from Long Island University. He has been a stock assessment scientist for over 30 years, previously with the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts Marine Fisheries, and New York Department of Environmental Conservation. His accomplishments include the advancement of stock assessment methods for a wide range of invertebrate and finfish species, fishery management advice for regional, national and international fisheries, and global leadership in evaluating geographic stock structure and modeling spatially complex populations. He has chaired several regional, national and international working groups and committees and has convened workshops, symposia, and conferences for the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas, National Marine Fisheries Service, New England Fishery Management Council, American Fisheries Society and the Northeast Fish and Wildlife Conference. Steve received the American Fisheries Society’s Oscar E. Sette Award for sustained excellence in marine fishery biology, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s 2021 Scholar of the Year Award, and the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative’s Excellence in Mentoring Inaugural Award. He is also Past President of the American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists. His teaching and research agendas focus on population modeling, stock identification, fisheries management, collaborative research with fishermen, and application of advanced technologies for fishery science.
Meghna Marjadi – Post-Doc
Meghna is a CINAR Postdoctoral Fellow working with the Northeast Fishery Science Center to analyze fishery-dependent data to better understand how offshore wind development may impact the fishing industry.
Ali Frey – Lab Technician
Ali’s research is focused on studying impacts of offshore wind farms on commercially and recreationally important fish species. In collaboration with fishing industry partners, she uses acoustic telemetry tags to track fish movement and behavior in and around offshore wind energy areas. During her time at SMAST, Ali has tagged 250+ fish as part of projects at the Block Island Wind Farm and Cox Ledge.
Cole Carrano – PhD Candidate
Cole’s PhD dissertation has focused on modeling index selectivity for fishery stock assessments. Check out his abstract HERE!
Debra Duarte – PhD Candidate
Ben Galuardi – PhD Candidate
Max Grezlik – PhD Candidate
Max is broadly interested in operational applications of multispecies and ecosystem models for fisheries management. His work includes a review of operational applications of multispecies models around the world, a multispecies application for CPUE standardization of Western Gulf of Maine Cod, and an ecosystem model of Georges Bank to facilitate exploration of ecosystem based fisheries management strategies.
Jessie Kittel – PhD Candidate
PhD student and 100-ton captain Jessica Kittel is using climate data to better understand fish stocks. She is primarily focused on yellowtail flounder and exploring whether or not incorporating climate data can provide more accurate models for estimate stock size. Check out Jessie’s feature story HERE!
Marjorie Lyssikatos – PhD Candidate
Owen Nichols – PhD Candidate
Fiona Edwards – Master’s Candidate
Fiona’s work is focused on portfolio management of fisheries. She is interested in ecosystem-based management and incorporating fishery and revenue data to include species interactions and economic considerations into fisheries management. Learn more about Fiona’s work HERE!
Keri Anne Goncalves – Master’s Candidate
Dave Martins – Master’s Candidate
Sierra Richardson – Master’s Candidate
Sierra’s work is focused on developing standardized CPUE indices for the commercial monkfish fishery. She is working closely with the fishermen, as well as the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance to produce reliable, meaningful results that will improve the stock assessment for monkfish.
Malik Neron – Professional Science Master’s Candidate
Malik has spent most of his time at SMAST working closely with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, particularly assisting with surveying. He has assisted with the Winter Flounder Fyke Net Survey, eDNA sampling at the wind farms, and many trawl and seine surveys. For his PSM internship, Malik worked as a Habitat Program Assistant. He has also worked as an MRIP Fisheries Technician during the summer!
